Despite the downswings in the global economy which the world has seen over the past few years, tourism has continued to boom.Have you ever wondered which are the most popular travel destinations? Each year, World Tourism Organization makes a ranking of the most visited countries in the world, counting the international tourists who come in each country. In the last three years, European destinations such as France, Spain and Italy were in forefront, but in 2010 China surpassed Spain and Italy, being in third place after France and USA.
This kind of list is usually pretty much the same each year, but every now and then a new entry or a drop in popularity makes for a surprise.
The World Tourism Organization defines tourists as people who “travel to and stay in places outside their usual environment for more than twenty-four (24) hours and not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited”.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, France was the most-visited country in 2013 with 84.7 million visitors. The U.S. came right behind with 69.8 million visitors, and Spain was third with 60.7 million visitors.
